In aviation, a “hand prop” refers to a method of starting an aircraft’s engine, typically small piston-powered aircraft, by manually turning the propeller using physical force, usually by hand. This method is sometimes used when the aircraft’s engine lacks an electric starter or in emergency situations when the starter system fails.
