Mach lines are created when a jet travels through the air at extremely high speeds, especially as it approaches or exceeds the speed of sound. The aircraft compresses the air around it, creating pressure waves and vapor patterns that can appear as sharp streaks or cone shaped lines caused by changes in temperature, pressure, and moisture in the atmosphere.
